Summer Activities on a Budget

Summer Activities on a Budget

Just because you are working hard towards a major financial goal doesn’t mean that you can’t have fun in the summertime. Below are a few ideas for free local things to do so that you can still enjoy yourself without having to spend a fortune this summer.

1. Visit your local library – If you haven’t used your library card in years, it’s time to dust it off and take it to your nearest public library. Not only can you find books to check out for free, but you can also find free audiobooks. To find a list of book ideas, check out the American Bankers Association’s Financial Reading List, New York Times Best Sellers List, or Penguin Random House and Reese Witherspoon’s book club Hello Sunshine on Instagram. You might even be able to catch local authors and journalists giving presentations on their books. Your local library may offer free classes on Pinterest, closet organization, essential oils, yoga and more.

2. Attend a free concert or show – Some local parks, gardens or town squares host free concerts featuring local talent. There could also be free open mic nights or a free series showcasing a play or orchestra performance.

3. Enjoy a day at the zoo – Take advantage of the free admission at both the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago, IL, and the Saint Louis Zoo in St. Louis, MO.  Not only is it an educational and fun experience for both children and adults, but it’s also a great source of exercise and fresh air.

4. Go to the park – Spend some time outdoors by taking your family and pet to the park! It’s also a great meeting place for family get-togethers, children play dates, and picnics.

5. Take advantage of your local trail – Go for a walk, run or bike ride at the trail in your city or town. This is a great source of exercise, and can also be a special bonding experience with family and friends.

6. Play outdoor sports – There are many sports that are fun to do outside in the warm weather, such as tennis, frisbee golf, soccer or co-ed softball. Depending on the sport, you may only need one or two other people, or you can join a local league.

7. Visit local museums – If your town or city has free museums, this can be an educational experience for both children and adults. It’s a great way to learn about history and see beautiful art. May we suggest a trip to the Saint Louis Art Museum? Admission to the Museum is free every day, and admission to main exhibitions is free on Friday.

8. Attend local outdoor events – Some small towns or cities host food or wine/beer festivals. These events present a great opportunity to meet people, enjoy live music, and see what’s new in your town, such as new restaurants or boutiques. Also, check to see if there’s a local farmers’ market nearby if you’re looking to buy fresh local produce.
