“Heart of Alaska” Cruise/Land Tour 2020

Monday, August 17
Transfer to St. Louis airport for flights to Fairbanks. Upon arrival we will transfer to the hotel for our two night stay. (B)

Tuesday, August 18
We will have a fun day beginning with a city tour of Fairbanks, as well as a visit to the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. You will then be transferred to the Gold Dredge #8 where you will ride the Tanana Valley Railroad through the gold fields to the dredge. Meet Alaskan Gold Miners and learn to pan for gold that you get to keep. Later, you will be transfered to the Chena River for a scenic riverboat cruise. Enjoy this three-hour cruise that will take you into the heart of Alaska and introduce you to a family who has made the rivers of Alaska a way of life. You will see a float plane take off alongside the boat, visit the home and kennels of the late four-time Idiatarod winner Susan Butcher, and see her champion sled dogs in action. For dinner, you’ll enjoy the delicious Alaskan meal at Pioneer Park’s Salmon Bake. (B, D)

Wednesday, August 19
After breakfast at the lodge, enjoy a scenic motor coach ride to Denali. This afternoon travel deep into Denali National Park on the Denali Tundra Wilderness Tour given by the Park Service and search the pristine wilderness for Denali’s “big 5” consisting of bear, moose, caribou, wolves, and dall sheep. This six to eight hour journey is narrated allowing for insight into the animals, flora and fauna of this spectacular region. A snack box lunch is included. Overnight at a Denali Lodge for one night. Thursday, August 20
Breakfast at the lodge. Scenic Wilderness Express Train in a deluxe domed rail car journey to Talkeetna, including lunch on the train. Balance of afternoon and evening will be at leisure to enjoy optional tours such as hiking, flighseeing, mountain viewing, rafting or just relaxing at the Lodge. Overnight Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge. Friday, August 21
Today, board your motor coach for a scenic journey south to the coastal community of Seward. Enroute enjoy a brief city tour of Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city with time for lunch on your own. Also included is a visit to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center where you will have a chance to see Alaskan wildlife up close. Our journey will continue along the Kenai Peninsula to Seward where we will board the beautiful ‘Celebrity Millennium’ for a 7-night cruise. You will have time to settle in to your stateroom and start exploring the ship before we sail away at 8:00 p.m. (B, D)

Saturday, August 22 – Hubbard Glacier, Alaska
A full day of glacier and wildlife viewing by ship allows you to see and experience the immensity of Alaska and its strong forces of nature. (B, L, D)

Sunday, August 23 – Juneau , Alaska
The capital city can only be reached by sear or air, and is home to the Mendenhall Glacier and Visitor Center just north of town. A long day in port allows you to join a fishing expedition for salmon or halibut, take a whale watching cruise, or enjoy an outdoor salmon bake. Or take the Mt. Roberts Tram to the top for great views and a sampling of more Alaska history. (B, L, D)

Monday, August 24 – Skagway, Alaska
Walk the wooden sidewalks of this ‘Gold Rush’ town and shop or dine in 1890’s style. Thirteen hours in port allows for several tours, perhaps including an excursion on the ‘White Pass & Yukon Railroad’ steam train which follows the Chilkoot Pass up to the Yukon. Shops abound for those that need ‘retail therapy’ and outdoor fans can visit an Eagle Preserve. (B, L, D)

Tuesday, August 25 – Icy Strait Point, Alaska
This former salmon cannery, is now the site for many types of land and sea adventures and shore excursions, which will be available exclusively for ship’s passengers. For thrill seekers the Zip Line here is a ‘must’, and very scenic too. (B, L, D)

Wednesday, August 26 – Ketchikan, Alaska
This small fishing village in North America’s only rain forest is picturesque. Optional tours include the lumberjack show, a visit to a Totem Village or flight-see over Misty Fjords National Park. (B, L, D)

Thursday, August 27 – Cruising the Inside Passage
A sea day filled with amazing sights along Alaska’s Inside Passage, and time to enjoy the shipboard amenities and activities. Time to pack up and start to review your many memories. (B, L, D)

Friday, August 28
The ‘Millennium’ sails into Vancouver, Canada. After breakfast, disembark the ship and transfer to Vancouver airport for flights back to St. Louis and transfer home. (B)
