Deposit Checks Without Going to the Bank

Busy schedule? No problem. Learn how mobile deposit makes managing your money faster, easier, and more convenient
Whether you’re traveling, away from your local branch, or simply managing a full schedule, mobile and online banking make it easier to stay on top of your finances.

Mobile deposit is a convenient option for one-off checks or busy times like tax season — working alongside any direct deposits you already have set up.

“Mobile deposit transforms a routine task into a seamless experience — eliminating friction, saving time, and meeting customers exactly where they are: on their phones. In today’s digital-first landscape, that’s not a luxury — it’s the standard,” says Sara Porter, SVP, Director of Digital Strategy at First Mid.

Tips for Easy Mobile Deposits

Mobile deposit is designed to easily fit into your day and help manage your time. With just a few taps on your phone, you can deposit a check in minutes.

Mobile banking apps like First Mid’s take the unnecessary “visit” out of banking for everyday tasks.

A few simple steps can help ensure your check is deposited quickly and securely:

Endorse your check correctly
Sign the back of your check and write “For mobile deposit only.” After submitting, mark the check “deposited – mobile” with the date. Some checks include a designated space for this.

Hold on to your check
Keep your check in a secure place for at least 14 days — or until the deposit fully clears. Then, shred it.

Is Mobile Check Deposit Safe?

First Mid’s Mobile Deposit service is built with multiple layers of security, so you can deposit checks with confidence:
  • Encrypted images and data during transmission
  • Secure login with biometrics (Face ID or fingerprint) and two-factor authentication
  • Ongoing fraud monitoring to detect duplicate or suspicious activity

How to Stay Safe with Online Banking

To help protect your account, follow these best practices:
  • Enable biometric login
  • Use a strong password with two-factor authentication
  • Only use First Mid or other bank’s official app (avoid links from emails or texts)
  • Avoid public Wi-Fi, or use a VPN
  • Set up account alerts for deposits and transactions
  • Shred checks after they’ve cleared

Security tip: Use a passphrase instead of a password. It’s easier to remember and harder to guess. For example:

Password: FirstMid2026!
Passphrase: SecureSimpleBankingWithFirstMid!#1

Tax Season Reminder

Receiving a refund check? If you didn’t set up direct deposit when you filed your taxes, mobile deposit is a quick way to access your money without leaving home.

An Easy Choice for Busy Days

Streamlining your banking is all about making life easier. Tools like mobile deposit and direct deposit help you save time, stay flexible, and manage your money securely.

Porter adds, “Mobile deposit gives our customers a faster, safer, and more convenient way to manage their money, so they can spend less time banking and more time living.”

Mobile deposits are reviewed, subject to deposit limits, and may not be immediately available. Funds availability may vary based on deposit time, amount, and account history. Please refer to your account agreement for full details.
