First Mid is honored to recognize Mark Smith, Farm Manager with First Mid Ag Services in Bloomington, IL, as our Volunteer Spotlight for March 2026. Mark is committed to supporting local community organizations through volunteerism, consistently demonstrating our core values.
What causes are you passionate about supporting through volunteerism? The value of community service was instilled in me at an early age. Growing up on a family farm, I was encouraged to be involved in organizations such as church, Boy Scouts, Future Farmers of America (FFA), and Student Council. That foundation continued into college, where I became active in FarmHouse Fraternity and the Marching Illini. After college, my commitment to service carried into the Bloomington community. I currently serve as Senior Warden at my church, President of the Rotary Club, and Den Leader for my son’s Cub Scouts pack. Through these experiences, I’ve built meaningful relationships and seen firsthand how interconnected service can be. Each organization has shaped my life in important ways, creating opportunities, friendships, and lasting impact for my family and me.
What would you tell others who are thinking about volunteering? Start simple and ease into it. Begin by researching organizations whose missions align with your interests and values. There are many worthy causes looking for support, so finding the right fit is important. Much of the enjoyment derived from volunteer service stems from the relationships you build along the way.
What are ways you think others can get involved? Be willing to make eye contact, step forward, and start a conversation. Many service organizations have seen a decline in membership and will welcome new members and fresh perspectives. If you see a group doing meaningful work in the community, offer your encouragement and ask how you can help. Often, simply expressing interest is all it takes to open the door.
