First Mid is honored to recognize Mike Taylor, Chief Operating Officer, as our Volunteer Spotlight for January 2026. Mike is committed to supporting local community organizations through volunteerism, consistently demonstrating our core values.
What causes are you passionate about supporting through volunteerism? Supporting organizations that strengthen our local community and make a meaningful difference in people’s quality of life has always been important to me. I currently serve as the Treasurer for Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, which allows me to use my background to support and enhance community healthcare. I also volunteer with Special Olympics, where I have the privilege of celebrating and supporting individuals with special needs. In addition, I enjoy serving alongside others through my local church, and I previously coached youth sports, where I loved encouraging kids and helping them grow. For me, each of these opportunities is a way to share Christ’s love through action – by building relationships, showing up for others, and offering help where it’s needed. My parents always asked me, “How are you adding value? How are you making a difference?” That reminder has stayed with me and continues to guide my motivation for serving, especially when life gets busy.
What would you tell others who are thinking about volunteering? Volunteering is one of the most meaningful ways to give back. Every hour you spend makes a difference – whether you’re helping an organization run more smoothly, encouraging young athletes, or supporting individuals with special needs. Volunteering benefits others, but it also brings personal satisfaction, new relationships, and a sense of purpose. I’ve learned firsthand that the saying “when you give of yourself, you often receive more in return” is true. You don’t need a lot of time or special expertise to get involved; you just need to be willing to show up, be present, and bring a positive attitude.
What are ways you think others can get involved? There are many ways to get involved, depending on your interests and availability. You can volunteer at local hospitals or serve on community boards, assist with programs like Special Olympics or One Stop Community Christmas, or support outreach efforts through your local church. Those who enjoy working with kids might help with youth sports, band programs, or academic activities. Many organizations truly need assistance and offer flexible opportunities, making it easy to find something that fits your schedule and interests. The key is being open and reaching out.
Congratulations, Mike, on being featured as a Volunteer Spotlight! We are honored to showcase the impact you have on your community. First Mid is proud to support your volunteer efforts
