First Mid is honored to recognize Austin Schwartz, Officer, Trust Administrator, in Burlington, IA, as our Volunteer Spotlight for September 2026. Austin is committed to supporting local community organizations through volunteerism, consistently demonstrating our core values.
What causes are you passionate about supporting through volunteerism? I’m passionate about supporting organizations that create opportunities for children and families in our community. One of the causes closest to my heart is Kiwanis, whose mission is to “serve the children of the world.” That mission has inspired many of my other volunteer roles, including serving as an assistant coach for the Burlington Junior Wrestling team, a board member for the Mississippi Queens Wrestling Club, a youth ministry volunteer at my church, a Junior Achievement volunteer for local high school students, finance chair for the district Scouts, President of the Friends of Community Field, and a board member for the Burlington Baseball Association. Whether it’s through sports, education, or community programs, I enjoy helping provide opportunities that allow kids of all ages to learn, grow, and succeed.
What would you tell others who are thinking about volunteering? My wife always says I can’t say no to a volunteer opportunity, but I look around at the people who have helped build our community and realize that if they had all said “no,” we wouldn’t be where we are today. My advice is simple: say “yes” when you can. The greatest impact often begins with simply saying yes.
What are ways you think others can get involved? There’s a volunteer opportunity for just about everyone. Think about the causes or activities that interest you, then look for organizations that align with those passions. With many groups across the country experiencing a decline in volunteers, they’re always happy to welcome new people and help them find meaningful ways to get involved.
