First Mid is honored to recognize Chris Kirk, VP, Commercial Lender in Edwardsville, IL, as our Volunteer Spotlight for July 2026. Chris is committed to supporting local community organizations through volunteerism, consistently demonstrating our core values.
What causes are you passionate about supporting through volunteerism? I’m passionate about serving organizations that foster leadership, strengthen communities, and support economic growth. At First Baptist Maryville, I volunteer in the Student Ministry, serve as a Deacon, and am a member of the church’s Leadership Team. I also serve as a Director of the Leadership Council Southwestern Illinois, an organization that brings together business, industry, government, education, and labor to support economic growth throughout the region, and as Chairman of its Membership Communications Committee. In addition, I am a member of Alton Main Street’s Economic Vitality Committee, which works to strengthen the business environment in downtown Alton, IL. Volunteering with these organizations allows me to work alongside others who are committed to making our region a better place to live and work.
What would you tell others who are thinking about volunteering? You often get as much out of volunteering as you put into it. Beyond the opportunity to give back, volunteering allows you to meet people you might not otherwise cross paths with and build relationships with others who share similar interests and values. Those connections can be just as rewarding as the impact you make through your service.
What are ways you think others can get involved? Start by looking for organizations or causes that align with your interests and passions. Consider how your skills and experiences might benefit an organization and be open to opportunities that may push you outside your comfort zone. If you have friends or acquaintances who are involved with a group, ask them about their experience and what they enjoy most about volunteering. Learning from others can be a great way to find the right fit and take that first step toward getting involved.
