First Mid is honored to recognize Roy Blackburn, Network Specialist in Mattoon, IL, as our Volunteer Spotlight for May 2026. Roy is committed to supporting local community organizations through volunteerism, consistently demonstrating our core values.
What causes are you passionate about supporting through volunteerism? I’m passionate about supporting youth sports. I currently serve as President of the Mattoon Youth Wrestling Club, where youth ages four through 8th grade compete across the state of Illinois. I’ve also served as an assistant wrestling coach for Mattoon Middle School and previously as head coach of the Mattoon Junior Football League. Coaching youth of all ages is incredibly rewarding because it allows me to watch them grow — not only in their knowledge of the sport, but also in sportsmanship, teamwork, and work ethic. Most importantly, they learn how to handle both winning and losing with character. I believe sports are one of the best ways to prepare children for the ups and downs of life, and volunteering as a coach gives me the opportunity to be a positive role model.
What would you tell others who are thinking about volunteering? Volunteering is incredibly fulfilling and something everyone should experience. There are so many people and organizations in need, it’s easy to find a cause that fits your interests. Many of us have benefited from the support of others along the way, and volunteering is a meaningful way to give back. Even dedicating just one day a year can make a difference in your community.
What are ways you think others can get involved? A great place to start is by connecting with others who are already involved. Reaching out to work colleagues who are actively engaged in volunteering can provide helpful ideas and inspiration. You can also look for opportunities that align with your personal interests by doing a simple search online. If you’re unsure where to begin, consider visiting a local nursing home — spending time with residents can make a meaningful impact, especially for those who may feel isolated.
Congratulations, Roy, on being featured as a Volunteer Spotlight! We are honored to showcase the impact you have on your community. First Mid is proud to support your volunteer efforts.
