Volunteer Spotlight – Johnette Mitchell

March 2025 Volunteer Spotlight - Johnette Mitchell

First Mid is honored to recognize Johnette Mitchell, Treasury Management Relationship Manager in Decatur, IL, as our Volunteer Spotlight for March 2025. Johnette is committed to supporting local community organizations through volunteerism, consistently demonstrating our core values.

What causes are you passionate about supporting through volunteerism? I am deeply passionate about supporting causes that provide resources to underserved communities, particularly focusing on under-resourced small businesses, women, and youth. I am drawn to initiatives that allow me to share knowledge, compassion, and empathy while also fostering my personal growth mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Creating initiatives such as “Winedown Wednesdaze,” which highlights and supports minority-owned small businesses, gives me a sense of purpose. Mentoring youths and providing a safe space for them to feel valued and heard is incredibly gratifying. Offering financial wellness workshops to help individuals make smart money decisions and achieve their life goals has been a life-changing experience. Finally, serving on community boards like Block by Block, She Gaves, and the Boys and Girls Club aligns with my passions and drives meaningful change within my community.

What would you tell others who are thinking about volunteering? Volunteering is a powerful way to give back, and it’s something everyone can do, even if you can’t donate money to every cause. As volunteer advocate Gayla LeMaire wisely said, “Volunteers are paid in six figures…. S-M-I-L-E-S.” Our time doesn’t cost us anything, but it can mean the world to those in need. Start small, do your research, and find what truly inspires you. If it feels like a chore, it might not be the right cause for you. Volunteering should be an intentional, positive experience, and your time is valuable. Don’t hesitate to seek mentorship from experienced volunteers. After all, it takes a village to build a thriving community, and we all have a role to play in serving others. The rewards of giving your time are priceless.

What are ways you think others can get involved? Share your experiences to inspire others, as people often need to see the impact to believe in it. Participate in volunteer training to foster inclusivity and feel more comfortable in unfamiliar spaces. Attend workplace and community events to learn about various projects and network with others. Utilize any paid volunteer hours offered by your company to explore different causes and find one you’re passionate about. If you notice a gap in your community, take the initiative to create a cause that bridges it and encourage others to support you. Lastly, seek out a volunteer mentor who can provide guidance and support in your journey. By taking these steps, you can play a vital role in your community and experience the priceless rewards of heartfelt volunteer work.

Congratulations, Johnette, on being featured as a Volunteer Spotlight! We are honored to showcase the impact you have on your community. First Mid is proud to support your volunteer efforts. To read our other employee spotlights, click here.
