First Mid is honored to recognize Karen Dickson, Community Development Officer, as our Volunteer Spotlight for September 2024. Karen is committed to supporting local community organizations through volunteerism, consistently demonstrating our core values.
What causes are you passionate about supporting through volunteerism? I am most passionate about supporting causes that focus on financial empowerment for both seniors and children. Our seniors deserve protection and guidance to ensure they remain financially safe, especially in their later years when they may be more vulnerable. Equally important, I believe that children, as the future leaders of our communities, should be armed with financial knowledge from an early age. By teaching them to make sound financial decisions, we set them up for success and help build a stronger, more financially literate generation. Volunteering in these areas allows me to contribute to a cause that has a lasting impact on both ends of the age spectrum, fostering security and wisdom across our communities.
What would you tell others who are thinking about volunteering? Volunteering is a selfless act that comes from the heart, offering you the chance to make a real difference in someone else’s life – and possibly even your own. The gratitude and fulfillment you receive from giving your time and effort are beyond anything you can imagine. It’s an opportunity to connect with others, support your community, and grow as a person. Dare to make a difference!
What are ways that you think others can get involved? There are many ways to get involved and make a meaningful impact, and it all starts with finding opportunities that match your interests and skills. Begin by looking within your community, whether it’s through local events, favorite charities, or organizations that resonate with you. If you’re passionate about a particular cause, there’s likely a group that could benefit from your help. Additionally, don’t overlook opportunities at work; many companies offer volunteer programs or partnerships with nonprofits that make it easy to get involved. By aligning your efforts with what you enjoy and what you’re good at, you’ll find volunteering not only rewarding but also deeply fulfilling.
