First Mid is honored to recognize Wendy Ruud, Branch Manager in Osage Beach, MO, as our Volunteer Spotlight for February 2024. Wendy is committed to supporting local community organizations through volunteerism, consistently demonstrating our core values.
What causes are you passionate about supporting through volunteerism? I love anything to do with animals – all animals! A highlight from the past year was volunteering at Forget Me Not Horse Rescue – it was an unbelievable day spent caring for animals that have no say in what their circumstances have become. Another passion of mine is helping the community I live in – no matter what that may look like. I spend time helping at Community Days, the Senior Center, Easter Egg Hunts in the Park, and all sorts of events through my Rotary club. Over Christmas, I helped with an event that gave over 350 families and their children gifts – every child deserves a gift under a tree at Christmas. I have been blessed with the means to share my gifts with others through servant giving. Service above self!
What would you tell others who are thinking about volunteering? Find your gift and what you love and then reach out in your community. Contact your local Chamber and find out about not-for-profit associations and groups in your area and their contacts. Give them a call and see where they need help. Contact your local park district and/or city hall – they always have community events they need volunteers for. Reach out to local schools – do they have community nights? Do they need help in concessions or taking tickets at the door for sports games or fine arts performances? These are great ways to help AND connect with others in your community.
What are ways that you think others can get involved? Join a local Rotary club. People think Rotary is only for older people or people with lots of money – it isn’t. It’s a great place to meet people, learn about your community, and get involved. I’ve been a Rotarian for over 25 years, and it is where I got started in volunteering and truly learned the meaning of putting service above self.
Congratulations, Wendy, on being featured as a Volunteer Spotlight! We are honored to showcase the impact you have on your community. First Mid is proud to support your volunteer efforts.
